Costa Rica Day Tours - Monteverde
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is one of the most diverse and rich cloud forests in the New World. The reserve is 26,000 acres and is an important link in the growing network of protected areas in Costa Rica. Your guide will point out many of the incredible birds, plants and animals for which the reserve is famous. It is best known as home to the beautiful Resplendent Quetzal but it protects hundreds of other birds, mammals and plant species as well as reptiles, amphibians and insects. Included is round trip transportation from your lodge, entrance fee and guide.
The Butterfly Garden is a section of forest at a lower altitude than the Monteverde Reserve that has been covered with a fine screen. There you can see all the different butterfly species that inhabit the zone, including the beautiful Blue Morpho. Guides give a fascinating explanation of the habits of each species, with ample botanical information as well. At the entrance is a free exhibit about the butterfly's life cycle.
Sky Walk is a complex of suspended bridges and paths, built within the cloud forest. These allow the observation of flora and fauna from the ground level to the top of the trees. There is 3,280 feet of paths, that have been designed and built, including five suspended bridges. This is the best opportunity to know and learn about the complexity and beauty of the forest. Sky Trek gives you access to the tropical cloud forest canopy through a system of tree platforms, zip lines and suspended bridges. The whole system is integrated by a path 7000 feet in length. These activities should be booked at your own discretion.
The opportunity to ascend in to the forest canopy using modified techniques, that were previously done by canyon rappelers, provides an enjoyable adventure. After a short hike through the rainforest, you climb up inside a strangler fig tree to reach the first platform at its top. Your body harness is then attached to a pulley system on a steel cable and at about 75 feet above ground, you zip across to another tree platform. After several platforms, you will rappel down to ground level. This activity should be booked at your own discretion.
A secondary forest-farm located on the side and below the Cloud Forest Reserve, has become a great spotting place for a big variety of a birds and some large mammals. The vegetation is less dense and you have an excellent chance of seeing coatimundis, sloths, agoutis, porcupines, and white-faced monkeys, as well as butterflies and birds. Four signed trails lead through the 17-hectare property. One leads to a waterfall and the Bajo del Tigre Canyon. Included is roundtrip transportation from your lodge and entrance fee.
Afternoon with your guide visit Ranario, the Frog Pond of Monteverde. Tour this new herpetarium where you view over 20 species of frogs and other amphibians. With a local guide, learn about the species that are unique to the tropics of Costa Rica, such as the colorful Poison Arrow, Red Eyed Tree Frog and the very large Marine Toad. After the guided tour of the terrariums with simulated natural habitats, wander through the exhibits of the frog species and their natural history, visit the art gallery, gift and coffee shop. Part of the proceeds from this exhibit is dedicated to research and conservation efforts. Entrance fees and local guide included.
