Self Drive Volcano and Hot Springs Tour - 3 days / 2 nights

Arenal Volcano is one of the most scenic volcanoes in Costa Rica. It has the shape of an almost perfect cone, and can be seen from very far away, although not every tourist has the luck of observing its top, since clouds appear and disappear constantly, sometimes in a matter of seconds. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world: it makes a small eruption approximately every 45 minutes. Sometimes the sound of the eruption can be confused with thunder, depending on the distance to the volcano. Between the XIII and XIV Century its activity ceased, but erupted in 1968.

During the night, if the clouds do not obstruct the view, the flow of lava can be seen and photographed.

Tour Details

Tour Day 1

Your Costa Rica tour begins with a pick up by your 4x4 car rental for scenic drive to Arenal Volcano.Overnight at the Arenal Observatory Lodge.

From the Observatory, which is situated only 1.6 miles south of the volcano, visitors have an impressive view of this "giant which rumbles" and erupts with spectacular displays of vapor and lava. The Observatory is the only lodge situated within the Arenal Volcano National Park, which encompasses thousands of acres of pristine rainforest and teems with tropical birds and wildlife.

Tour Day 2

Free day at the Arenal Observatory to enjoy the grounds that include a spring fed swimming pool and Jacuzzi and self guided trails or go drive over to the world famous Tabacon Hot Springs and enjoy resting and relaxing in a truly amazing atmosphere. You may also participate in one of the many optional activities offered in the Arenal area. Overnight Arenal Observatory Lodge.

Tour Day 3

In the morning, before your drive back to San Jose or other destination within Costa Rica,  join other guests from the Lodge, for a guided tour hike inside the Arenal Volcano National Park for a close-up exploration of a lava flow prior to the drive back to San Jose.
