COSTA RICA PACIFIC COAST FISHING The fishing off the western coast of Costa Rica is some of the best in the world, all year round. Here you can find Pacific Blue, Black and Striped Marlin and the famous huge concentrations of Pacific Sailfish. Along with these billfish there are tuna from football size to well over 200lbs along with Dorado (mahi-mahi) and Wahoo. Inshore action is also excellent with Snook, Giant Cubera Snapper and the amazing Roosterfish. Having operated our own charter operation we have had the opportunity to fish the entire coast and get to know all of the best captain’s and how to find them. Costa Rica Fishing Offshore
The seasons are fairly straight forward. The central (Los Suenos and Quepos) and south Pacific (Drake’s bay and Crocodile Bay) are good all year round with December through April being the peak season. The north pacific of Guanacaste also hold fish all year however the Papagayo winds that are common from January through April can make the typical flat ocean into a rough experience. This is why most boats in this area head to Los Suenos, Quepos and other points south during this time.
Costa Rica Fishing Inshore
Guanacaste is drier than the central pacific (Los Suenos and Quepos) and significantly Drier than the southern coast (Drake’s bay and Crocodile Bay). Therefore the inshore action tends to get cleaner inshore water most of the year but its very good in the other parts of the country, especially from December through March |
The bottom formations
found just off the coast are also good year round but when there is a lot of
rain the rivers tend to push out “dirty” water which can put a crimp on the
action. The rainy season starts in May, peaks in September and October and is
generally over by the end of December
