| Hi Rob, We are
planning a month visit to the Playa Flamingo area for the month of Feb.
I\'ve been trying to find a place to do some inshore fishing, I\'m not
into the deep sea stuff. I\'m looking for a small boat rental with a
local that can show me the ropes since this is the first time in Costa
Rica. I\'m also into flyfishing and wonder if you know of any places on
the Pacific side that might be into that. Thanks in advance. Dave. |
| Dave, In Flamingo
during the winter months we tend to get what we call "Papagayo Winds"
that can get to 30-40 knots and come out of nowhere. For that reason I
do not suggest any craft that could withstand the seas created by the
winds. There are fly fishing opportunities inshore but if there is a run across
open water to a place like the "bat islands" I would suggest a bigger
boat, say at least 30 foot. Rob |
| My wife and I would
like to catch some sailfish in late October. Where should we go? (We
were in Papagayo Bay in June 2005 and did not catch any sails and only
had one hook-up. We did catch a lot of roosters, fortunately. |
| Hi, I am actually
quite surprised you did not do better in June at Papagayo. Most people
do well there in the summer months...as opposed to October, which is
probably one of the less productive times of the year. Nonetheless if
that's the only time you can go then a good crew is essential. Some of
my best days at the Bat Islands have come in October. If you cannot get
a good boat then do not waste your time and money.

| I am a travel agent
from Louisiana, i have couples who want a really nice resort like punta
islita or paradisus playa conchal for lodging but want a deep sea
fishing day trip from this area. what would be available for the months
of aug and set. they are flexible with dates. what type of fishing can
they expect at this time of the year and what would be a day rate per
person? thanks, Nina. |
Hi Nina, I can see
about getting a boat from Carillo, which is nearby. Your clients should
see sailfish and perhaps marlin. There are also some tuna and dorado
depending on the currents.
Contact Chella at
Tico Travel
about availability please.Thanks,

| Dear Rob, Where would
you recommend going for 3 days of fishing with my wife as well as
enjoying Costa Rica in luxury? We have never been to Costa Rica but have
heard wonderful things about the country. Has the fishing picked up
lately? Thank you. |
Hi Ben, For a luxury
trip you want to go to Los Sueños.
The condos a re quite nice and the boat s are first class.
The fishing has been steady, even good. The beauty of the big boats at
Los Suenos is that they can get pretty much anywhere the fish are and
quite quickly . Whereas the boats in the other areas must pick what they
can reach in an hour or so.

Rob, Is it possible
to catch, keep and freeze fish? How is the bottom fishing? We like to
stay in an area that offers jungle excursions, night life and anything
else the country has to offer. Can you tell me where is the most
affordable place to stay and the best time of year to go?
Thanks for your help, LaMonte. |
LaMonte, There are
two places to go on the Caribbean for good fishing. The best is Barra
Colorado. Remember this is in the jungle and the only nightlife is
swinging from the trees. Its one of my favorite spots. Try
Casa Mar Lodge.
They will freeze fish for you but you need to check with your carrier to
see if they will allow you to ship it. I suggest a "soft" cooler and
then put it in a suitcase. If you show up with a big cooler you will
attract too much trouble. When in doubt of what to do they will say "no
go."
The alternative to Barra Colorado is Tortuguero. It has more tours but
can be more congested and the fishing is not as consistent. Try
Pachira lodge.
Good Luck,
Rob |
| What are a couple of
resorts you would recommend for a Nov-tarpon/snook fly fishing trip. I
don’t really need one all inclusive because my wife will only fish a
little. For her we would need some eco stuff and nice accommodations.
Thanks. |
Hi Doug, I assume you
are fly fishing by your email address. My old fishing partner Bill
Barnes has ( and I think still does) the record for common snook on 16lb
tippet, since 1980 I believe. He owned Casa Mar in Barra Colorado. Its
my favorite. Because the lodges are isolated they are all inclusive
deals. For more of a nature lodge area you can try Tortuguero but there
is alot of boat traffic there which is not good for fishing on fly. In
Tortuguerro look at the Pachira Lodge.
Good Luck.

Rob. If I were going
to bring a teaser daisy chain to give to the captain what size, color
and type would you think is best far sails and marlin in Costa Rica.
Thanks Jeff. |
| Jeff,
You may want to bring some teasers, orange, purple, red and green all
work. A couple of cedar plugs and a Rapala or two for tuna, dorado and
wahoo may be fun too. Try to get to the Bat Islands (Murcielago) if the
winds are low. Rob |
| Rumor has it that the
fishing (billfish) is really bad and that a lot of charters have gone
out of business. That the long liners have ruined the fishing . We
usually fish 3 -4 times a year there. How about an on the level report.
Thanks, J Moore. |
| First of all everyone
has been talking about El Nino and how strong it has been. The real
answer answer is that Quepos was bad, very bad. Further south out of
the Golfito area is has been pretty good with a unheard of Marlin bite
along with the southern Nicoya area.At the tourney we help organize, the
Costa Rica Classic there where lots
of fish caught by a less than experienced group.
I do not think it is long liners at all. Most fish off of Ecuador and
have actually been reduced by law.
About eight years ago we had the same drop in fishing on another super
strong El Nino but it then rallied in April and May to high season
levels into the summer.I would not push the panic button, lets see how the rest of the year
plays out.

Question Regarding
the Pacific Coast - I am wanting to go fishing during the first week of
July. What is the best location for that time of year? Billfish
preferred but is there any other fishing that is in season that week?
Thanks, Browne. |
| Hi Browne,
I would suggest you try Tamarindo. The winds are usually way down and
the fish tend to move up to Guanacaste at that time. You could also try
Los Suenos and run around the Cabo to Gunacaste.
Rob |
We are staying at
sugar beach hotel on the north pacific side. My husband likes to fly
fish or would love to bone fish. Is there any of this nearby on this
side...how far would it be to access it.
Do you have recommendations? We are there the last week in march. |
Hi, In that area the
best fishing is usually at the Bat Islands or offshore. Many people fly
fish for Sailfish up there, which is quite different than fly fishing
for bone fish. He may want to try it but it also may not have the same
aspects he enjoys in bone fishing. Check with him and if he wants to give
it a shot we can check with some people. You also may need to consider
that it can get a little windy up there at that time of the year.
Rob |
| Question Regarding
the Pacific Coast - I will be in San Jose in late November. What fish
are best at that time and who would be a good charter to take? |
Ray,
November is a long way off. We are moving off of a strong El Nino which
has made me hold off on any traditional predictions so far in advance.
Since this is also a typical time of year when the fishing is good but
there are not alot of clients we can hold off now and wait to see what
is happening close to your dates...say three weeks or so out before you
arrive. The short answer. Hold on to your money, we will make a call
later on.Rob |
