 Quito  - The capital in the middle of the world

Quito is the perfect place to begin a vacation in Ecuador. Set in a compact valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks and filled with lovely Spanish colonial architecture, Quito is a UNESCO a World Heritage Site and is commonly called the most picturesque capital city in Latin America.

Tico Travel will orient the visitor to the many attractions in colonial and modern Quito. Start at the Central Bank Museum, one of the finest archaeological and gold museums in the Americas, to learn the history of Ecuador’s many layers of culture.

Only 16 miles to the north lies la Mitad del Mundo, where a monument straddling the equator enables one to step in the southern and northern hemispheres at the same time. Volcanoes surrounding Quito include the active Guagua Pichincha, located only 13 miles west of Quito, and Cotopaxi that, at nearly 20,000 feet, is the highest active volcano in the world.

THE EQUATORIAL MONUMENT

Just 25 minutes outside of Quito, visit "La Mitad del Mundo" (Middle of the World), marked by geographers as latitude 0 00´ 00" and take advantage of the opportunity to stand on both hemispheres at the same time. Visit the Equatorial Museum featuring a cultural and geological display of Ecuator´s different climatic zones as well as the colonial model village. Post your letters marked from "Mitad del Mundo".

COLONIAL QUITO

Stop over formidable churches, convents, civil buildings and mansions. San Diego and La Merced Convents. You will also visit the Museum of the City of Quito and Mansions from the 16th and 17th centuries, offer a breach to past centuries.
